COLLETORTO – 17th January – The S. Anthony Fire
The youths of the town collect wood and on a fixed day the pyres are set up in various places around the town. The firesides are the occasion for telling stories, recalling memories, fantasies and making prediction for the future.
BAGNOLI DEL TRIGNO - February - The Carnival
The carnival of Bagnoli del Trigno is a very special event, which found a worthy comparison in Molise only in the event of "months" Cercepiccola. The months of the year is not just a parade, it is a metaphorical portray of allegorical carts that’s depict the seasons of the year, seen from a farmer’s point of view tied to the cycle of country life. The exhibition presents extravagant characters partly coming from historical and social figures, and partly from fairy tales.
CERCEPICCOLA – February - The 12 months parade
The Months carnival Parade of Cercepiccola is an experience of cultural and anthropological interest, consisting in a parade of allegoric characters representing the months of the year, surrounded by a lot of other players. (Among them we identify the "grandfather" / the century, the "father"/the year, the seasons, the "cenciunari" (poor people) and two most outstanding "pulcinella" who inevitably make everything entertaining).
The event lasts the whole day, starting at 10 am and regularly recurring for four times in four different points of the village.
All around there are a lot of stands full of goods for sale, exhibiting all kinds of crap.
The clothing of the actors is one of the most interesting peculiarities.
In addition to normal frac, veils and coat, the characters wear decorated dresses with pins and other pending gold items, for a total weight of not less than kilo and not more than two.
ROCCHETTA AL VOLTURNO - February - The deer Man
During the Carnival a place nearby the village of Rocchetta al Volturno, Castelnuovo becomes the stage for one of the most meaningful events in Molise: the Mask of the Deer Man.
This ancient carnival is definitely one of the most spectacular in Italy. It is based on ancient propitiatory hunting rites, with a man dressed as a deer who roams around the town looking for food.
After a few adventures the deer is killed by the hunter who then revives it by blowing in its ear.
TUFARA - February - The devil’s Masquerade
On Shrove Tuesday one or more devils, wearing sheepkins, horns and black mask with a long red tongue, pursued by death and two squires, carry out raids in the town.
These raids continue until the late afternoon when the carnival is put on trial at the castle rock.The carnival represented by a straw puppet is convicted and a platoon of soldiers then throws the puppet from the castle rock to the devils, who take away from the town.
Many towns in Molise – 19th March - S. Joseph Day
The board of St. Joseph is the event of 19 March in various towns of Molise (including other non-listed, which, however, the tradition is not honoured unanimously by the population).
In honor of the Holy Family, some families, which are identified symbolic of St. Joseph, the Madonna and Child Jesus, prepare in their homes, hosting friends, a banquet characterized by the variety of "flat", generally based fish and vegetables, the number of which varies from 13 to 19
CAMPOBASSO - April - The Holy Friday
The Good Friday in Campobasso, is memorable and moving the procession of Our Lady of Sorrows and Jesus died.
Two choirs, a male the other female tune a text of Metastasio music from campobassano De Nigris: is "Teco I ..".
SANTA CROCE DI MAGLIANO – 27th April – The scarciacappa
The event has very ancient origins and is tied to the cult of the Crowned Virgin. It starts with the animals’ blessing led by children, followed by herds of sheep, oxen, goats, which – preceded by shepherds on horseback- circle around the church of San Giacomo for three times. After the blessing the Scarciacappa appears, dressed in rags and leading a pair of oxen, drawing a plough, placed the wrong way round. Behind him come the horsemen, that carry the statue of the Crowned Virgin in a religious procession.
SAN MARTINO IN PENSILIS – 29th /30th April and 2th May- The Cart race in honour of San Leo
According to tradition various communities contended for the body of St. Leo, when they arrived in Molise towards the end of the XIII century in a miraculous way. To resolve the dispute the remains were entrusted to a cart drawn by oxen so that the saint himself could decide where to stop.
The event is remembered annually with a parade of carts drawn by oxen, in honour of St. Leo, on the 30 April. Who wins the competition acquires the honour of bringing in a procession the Statue of St. Leo.
FOSSALTO- 1th May –The pagliara Maje Maje
The spring festival is celebrated according to a very ancient rite. May is personified in a cone built with sticks and covered with grass and flowers (The pagliara).
The pagliara goes around the entire town announcing the arrival of Spring and is welcomed with water poured from balconies and doors and with shouts of rascia, maje (abundance May).
URURI – 3th May – The cart race
The “partiti” are traditional carts(each is assisted by a number of other riders and helpers) which compete in the thrilling 4 km race to finish in the village.
The carts are drawn by oxen that are goaded with long elm poles. In the morning the wagons are carried near the mother church, where receive the blessing of the pastor, and then go to the place of departure.
The price is the honour of carrying the venerated Wood of the Cross- a fragment of the cross of Christ- which is the object of the festivities of the town.
S. GIULIANO DEL SANNIO – 8th /9th May
The Parade of the fusiliers
This is a military parade that takes place over two days.
The two flags of Italy (the flag of the Municipality and the flag of the Fusiliers’ Association) are brought to the main square and when they are raised the fusiliers fire volleys using period firearms.
In particular the fusiliers parade through the streets of the town preceded by the flags, the banners of the Municipality and the flag of the Fusiliers’ Association.
Immediately after the procession, when the statue comes out of the church, the fusiliers compete in shooting.
The custom is tied to when Garibaldi’s men passed thought the town, even though more than one version of the event exists.
LARINO – 25th /26th /27th May -The Feats of San Pardo
The Feast of San Pardo represents the triumph of the carts, in memory of St. Pardo, buried in Lucera by the people of Larino, which occurred on May 26 dell'842.
The holiday lasts for three days, from May 25 to 27.
The first day is devoted to St. Primiano, whose statue is carried through the village with a candlelight procession.
On the 26 parade wagons, decorated with flowers and drawn by oxen.
The festivities wound up on 27th with the parade of return on upstream Arona to lay San Primiano’s statue in its place.
CASTELLINO DEL BIFERNO – 12th May – Pizzichendò
After having eaten a traditional meal, thirteen men form a human pyramid. At the top of it the leader – equipped with a pole- acts as a pivot.
The pyramid travels along a route turning around its own axis, while the men forming the pyramid sing loudly.
The celebration originates from the custom of Molise’s farmers, who travelled to Apulia in order to take part to the Harvest and then return in July to their own lands, where the wheat used to ripe in a later time.
This traditional events is a farewell celebration to wish the farmers all the best along their way.
Moreover it portrays the sense of community and solidarity among the inhabitants, as it is evidenced by the distribution of sagnitelle and loaves.
CAMPOBASSO - June – Corpus Christi and Festival of Mysteries
Magical choreographies with angels, saints and the devils placed on the inventions designed in the 18th century by the artist from Campobasso, Paolo Saverio di Zinno and carried by hand along the roads of the town along a traditional route.
The procession illustrates the thirteen Mysteries, representation of the New Testament.
ISERNIA – 13th June –The Feast of San Pietro e Paolo
The Onion Fair was already mentioned in thirteenth century documents. The cultivation of onions is widespread throughout the territory and the red variety is amongst the a most common.
VASTOGIRARDI - 1th /2th July – The flight of the angel
The "Flight dell'Angelo" -the best known traditional appointment of Vastogirardi- is celebrated in honour of the Madonna delle Grazie, with very ancient origins.
During this ceremony a child dresses as an angel and tied to a cable with a system of pulleys, slides from the church to a building in front of it. Passing through space, the child distributes gifts to the people.
JELSI – 26th July – The traglie
The wheat Festival is a ritual that is repeated now by 1805,with many traglie -wooden carts drawn by oxen or farming vehicles- are paraded through the town.
Moreover it is an appointment of an ethnic, not only regionally importance and is regarded as a rite of thanksgiving and propitiation for an abundant harvest.
The carts display various compositions made from woven ears of wheat.
These compositions depict scenes of rural life, as well as religious and current events.
The entire community is involved in the preparation of the carts which starts a month before the festival, as soon as the wheat is ripe; at set point (intersections) the sheaves are collected.
Groups of experts in the art of weaving then divide them into bunches, soak them in water to make the straw flexible and then the weave them together.
TERMOLI – 1th /5th August – The Feast of San Basso
According to the legend, two fishermen found a sarcophagus containing the relics of St. Basso. From that moment, which is lost in the mists of the Middle Ages, anyone linked to around the sea, celebrates San Basso in the most appropriate way.
The feast of the town’s patron saint is celebrated by a procession of boats, barges and motorboats, behind the statue of the saint.
The statue is carried on the shoulders of the devotees to the port where it is placed on a fishing boat. When the procession is over, the statue of the Saint is left at the harbour to be venerated by the devotees and in the evening, returns to earth and is placed for a night in the fish market in the town.
The celebrations lasting for 4 days with markets, festivals, spectacular events (Fire of castle -fireworks).
AGNONE - August - Long race
At the crossroads of Staffoli take place the Long race, a competition with horses along impervious tracks. The program is enriched by skill competitions, western rodeo, musical performances in country and western style, festivals and exposure of food items.
RIPALIMOSANI – 11th /12th August – The Palio of quercigliole
At the church of Santa Maria della Snow, held a horse race in the festivities which lasts from 11 to 12 August.
The event is a typical horse race remarkable either for its competitive spirit than for the tradition according to which the winning horse enter the church and pay tribute to the Madonna by kneeling down.
ROCCAMANDOLFI - Half of August – The day of Shepherd
A show tied to the sheep/goat heritage of Roccamandolfi and the surroundings town. Numerous stands are set up related to the milk –cheese production. During the day the visitor can come in contact with the pastoral activities, visit various exhibitions tied to the theme and taste the meat of lamb and grilled cheese typical of the area, with folkloristic music.
CAPRACOTTA - Half of August – The Lamb day
In mid-August in Prato Gentile is organized the Pezzata.
It is the most appropriate celebration of the everyday life of the shepherds: up on a hill surrounded by trees, 1600 meters high, is roasted the lamb on brace, to be consumed in characteristic ceramic bowls.
Completing the gastronomic festival other pastoral recipes consisting in boiled lamb intestines.
RICCIA – September – The Grape Festival
In Riccia the grape harvest is celebrated with an impressive event. Numerous carts are prepared with wine –branches and wine-leaves and bunches of grapes and carry enormous baskets, filled with grapes as well as large containers of wine.
Men and women dressed traditional costumes, mime and re –enact scenes of country life, that portray the various phases of farm work or scenes of daily life.
The carts parade along the streets and the occupants amidst singing and dancing, which also involves the spectators, distribute wine and bunches of grapes.
The festival ends in the main square, where it is performed a dance involving the entire community.
AGNONE – 24th December – The N’docciata
A charming parade by torchlight on Christmas Eve at which a long torches made by pinewood (the n’doccia) are carried on the shoulder by bearers of the country, in traditional costumes though the streets of the town, bringing to life an ancient local tradition.
The evocative candlelight procession, which also includes "pictures of the living Nativity," is preceded by pipers and ended his journey in Plebiscito square.
The torches are prepared in advance, according to an ancient tradition, in the nine villages of the town.
The spectacular event, full of symbolic meanings, has been in recent years hosted in St. Peter's Square in Rome, in the presence of the Pope, before a impressive the crowd.
ACQUAVIVA COLLECROCE - December – The Smerceka
The SMERCEKA, a big torch that has basis for a tree and consists of wooden material is fixed in the square of the church and turned into correspondence with the beginning of holy Christmas.
BAGNOLI OF TRIGNO – 24th December – The N’doccie
On Christmas Eve parade through the streets of the country "n'docce" illuminating the path to the mother church. These large flashlights, very similar to those on the same day are brought in procession to Agnone, that probably beyond any symbolic significance, recalling the habits of local farmers forced to use when electric light was still a utopia, to move easily at night. The parade today plays, with the variant of accompaniment to the Virgin Mary and St. Joseph on the site shortly born Jesus, what had happened decades ago, when for midnight mass entire population reached the church.
ORATINO -24th December – The Faglia
The Faglia is a giant torch (10 meters in height and two meters of diameter) made from canes stolen, collected and piled in a secret place.
In the evening of Christmas Eve this huge torch, is carried on the shoulders by many carriers, passes through the roads of the town towards the mother church, where is placed vertically in the churchyard and burnt.
At dawn and throughout the following morning, Christmas Day, its ashes continue to "smoke". It is the ritual of "Faglia" whose origins and meaning are lost in the mists of time.
Moreover the scholars’ opinions about the origins of the event are different. From one hand it is to recognize ancient initiation rites, from other hand it seems to represents simply the custom of people to enlighten the dark nights of winter. More probably the event originates from an initiation rite to test the skills of the young men in finding canes.
The young men make fun of their fellow townsmen from whom they stole the canes.
